 Areas of focus

Eco-Build Africa works in the areas of Environmental Design, Research, Housing and Landscape. Our Organisation does both research and design aspects of the built environment. Our specialisation, aimed at adding value to our clients' operations, cover the core areas listed below.

Environmental Research
  • Acoustics;
  • Day lighting;
  • Passive cooling;
  • Energy efficiency;
  • Renewable energy and
  • Sustainable architecture.

Our work in these areas includes design and various forms of environmental modelling:

  • Thermal and Mass flow simulation using Esp-r:  We have used this software for natural ventilation simulations for the Aga Khan Academy Hall and Aga Khan Sport Club Hall. One of our directors also used this software to simulate Passive Downdraught Evaporative Cooling for the Ripco office Building in Botswana.
  • Acoustic simulation using Catt Acoustics. We used this software to simulate room acoustics for Braeside Primary School Assembly Hall.
  • Day lighting simulation using Radiance. One of our principles has extensively used this software to assess day lighting design in buildings in the UK
  • Physical Modelling using the wind tunnel and the artificial sky. We also use solar charts and solar radiation models to study sun shading.

The Climate Change Agenda

Eco-Build Africa Trust has worked with various CSOs in the past to develop the African position on climate change in the various segments which include;

  • Capacity building on Climate change and its impacts in the various sectors i.e. agriculture, energy, water, forestry etc.
  • Vulnerability, adaptation and mitigation in line with the Kyoto Protocol and the UNFCCC process
  • Clean Development Mechanism and carbon trading
  • Environmental Impacts of Housing
  •  Applied research on community housing and municipal energy; water and waste management.

Housing, community projects and applied research

  • Habitat planning;
  • Sustainable neighbourhoods design;
  • Sustainable urbanism;
  • Housing policy and programme formulation;
  • Low, medium and high income housing;
  • Sustainable construction techniques and
  • Legal and financial aspects of housing.

Our work in human settlements (housing and urban design) ranges from policy, through urban design to unit design. It is our policy to introduce socio-cultural, financial, institutional, and environmental aspects of sustainability to all our human settlement projects.

We have been involved in various collaborative research opportunities and studies with both local and international learning institutions and academics.Community development projects focussing on creating sustainable solutions to community problems.

Eco-Build Africa Trust Training Programme

Eco-Build Africa Trust runs a training programme on building construction and capacity building in various environmental and sustainability issues in conjunction with African governments, state universities in Kenya and also with local communities.
